What is andragogy and pedagogy?

Andragogy comes from the ancient Greek, meaning 'to lead a man'.

The theory by Malcolm Knowles addresses the principles that differ between how children learn (pedagogy) and how adults learn. There are proponents and dissedents to this school of thought, however the theory does raise four very interesting principles:

(1) Adults need to know why they need to learn something

(2) Adults need to learn experientially,

(3) Adults approach learning as problem-solving, and

(4) Adults learn best when the topic is of immediate value.
